Les bases du pilotage en karting : 5 conseils pour progresser dès tes premières sessions

The basics of karting: 5 tips to improve from your very first sessions

✍️ Introduction

Karting is the best school for motorsport.
But between what we think we know and the reality on the track, there's often a world of difference!
Whether you're a beginner or simply want to ride cleaner, here are 5 simple tips to improve your riding and have even more fun on every lap.

🛑 1. Master your braking

Braking accounts for 70% of the time .
👉 Brake hard in a straight line, then gradually release as you approach the turn (progressive braking).
If you brake too late, you lock the wheels and lose grip.
If you brake too early, you slow down too much.
➡️ Find the right balance point.
Quick tip: focus on the progression of pressure , not on force.

2. Only accelerate when your kart is straight

This is the most common mistake: wanting to accelerate again too soon.
Your kart doesn't have a differential — so if you accelerate mid-corner, the rear end slides.
➡️ Wait until your steering wheel is almost straight before accelerating again.
You'll come out stronger and you'll keep the grip.

🧭 3. Work on your trajectories

Each turn has a logic:

  • Wide at the entrance ,

  • tightened to the chord point ,

  • wide at the exit .
This is the key to a good passing speed.
Remember to look far ahead , not just at your hood.
Your gaze determines your trajectory — not your arms.

🧰 4. Prepare your equipment

A good driver also knows how to prepare their kart .
Always check:

  • Tire pressure (approximately 500 to 700 g when cold).

  • Chain tension.

  • Lubrication before each ride.

  • The fuel level and the wheel tightness.
A poorly maintained kart = a lap time lost before you've even driven it.

💪 5. Stay calm and analyze

Karting is also about mental strength.
Don't force it, don't get frustrated: the faster you try to go, the more mistakes you'll make.
Learn to analyze your laps : where you brake too late, where you exit poorly.
A GoPro or MyChron used properly will get you further than a new part.

🏁 Conclusion

Karting is a balance between technique, preparation and mental strength.
With these 5 basics, you can already gain several seconds per lap without changing anything about your equipment.
Work cleanly and consistently, and your rhythm will come naturally.
And most importantly: have fun — that's the key to being a good pilot.
